To register for an Accessory Residential Unit (ARU), the following steps must be taken to complete the application process:

New Accessory Residential Units

​New accessory residential units must be constructed under the building permit process and the application for registration submitted after the following work has been completed:

  • Final building inspection report
  • Compliance report from Electrical Safety Authority for both upper and lower units (dated within 6 months of submitting application)
  • A sketch of parking area with dimensions
  • Complete and signed ARU application form

Unregistered Existing Accessory Residential Units built after 1995

  • Final building inspection report
  • Compliance report from the Electrical Safety Authority for both upper and lower units (dated within 6 months of submitting the application) 
  • Complete and signed ARU application form
  • A sketch of parking area with dimensions

Existing Accessory Residential Units built prior to 1995

  • Letter from Central York Fire Services (dated within 6 months of submitting the application) indicating compliance with the Fire Code 
  • Compliance report from Electrical Safety Authority for both upper and lower units (dated within 6 months of submitting the application)
  • A sketch of parking area with dimensions
  • Complete and signed ARU application form

Please note that building permit fees or any other agency inspection fees are not included in the above and are payable by the applicant as required.
