  • TV series set to film scenes on Main Street on September 23

    Created: Thursday, September 19, 2024

The Town of Newmarket is hosting a production company, cast and crew on Monday, September 23 to shoot scenes for a television series in the downtown core. The production will bring revenue from the film permits and fees for the Town and its businesses along Main Street, including over $25,000 dedicated to support future downtown-related initiatives in partnership with the Main Street District Business Improvement Area (BIA).

The Town is working closely with the production company to balance the impact to residents and businesses in the area. Production will be limited to one-day including set-up, filming and clean-up with minimal disruption to businesses and travelers.

    About the shoot:

    Production & Filming: September 23 from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Scene Description: The storefronts at 193-197 Main St South will be set dressed to resemble an abandoned "library." The scene involves six actors driving south in the northbound lane of Main St South in a van, parking near the "library," and proceeding down the adjacent alleyway/driveway (Doug Duncan Drive).

    Parking Closures and disruptions:

    • Crews will be arriving at 6 a.m. to begin setting up the scene and production will be finished by 11 p.m., including clean-up.

    • Parking spaces will be reserved for the project, including:
      • Approximately 12 on-street parking spaces on Main Street South from Millard St. to Botsford St.
      • 3 on-street parking spaces on Botsford St.

    • Production vehicles and trailers will be located in the temporary gravel lot near P3.

    • Northbound traffic on Main Street between Botsford St. and Millard Ave. will be stopped intermittently throughout the day to allow for filming. York Regional Police will manage the traffic stops which will be approximately 3 minutes.

The Town's Municipal Enforcement Officers will place notices on vehicles parked in the spaces the day before parking spot closures. Vehicles will need to be relocated by 6 a.m. the morning of the closure. If vehicles remain in the spots at the time of closure, they will be towed by the Town's contractor to the nearby P3 Parking lot by Riverwalk Commons. Towing is at the production company's expense.

    Alternate places to park

    • Market Square
    • All parking lots east of Main Street (P1, P3 and P7) surrounding Riverwalk Commons
    • Fairy Lake
    • Other street parking on Main Street (following 30-minute parking limits)

The Town would like to thank the community, particularly its downtown residents and businesses for their patience during this time. While there will be some short-term inconveniences, the production brings a positive economic return to the Town, the community and local businesses.
