  • Community Safety Camera Program: Warning letter period ends on October 18

    Created: Tuesday, October 15, 2024

The warning letter period for the Town of Newmarket’s Community Safety Camera program is set to end on October 18, 2024. After this date, those who choose to speed in Community Safety Zones, near schools could receive a ticket. Please be aware of the speed limit, and drive within it.

“Thank you to everyone who has made a conscious effort to slow down to protect your neighbourhood. To those who continue to speed, this is your last reminder to alter your driving habits and drive the speed limit to avoid getting a ticket. As of October 18, anyone speeding near schools where Newmarket cameras are present, will be at risk of receiving a ticket.” says Mayor John Taylor. “Our goal is not to issue tickets or punish drivers, our goal is to educate and provide sufficient warning that speed cameras are in use – which we have done so continuously since the announcement of this program. Please keep our Town and your neighbourhood safe and drive the speed limit.”

    Educational Campaign
Since the announcement of the Community Safety Camera Program in 2023, the Town launched a public education campaign with the goal of altering driving habits and reducing speeds. This was done through various social media campaigns, a multi-lingual educational video, a dedicated webpage with additional information and frequently asked questions, road signs to warn drivers at all 14 locations, an all-household mailer and more.

    Warning Letter Period
Cameras were activated in phases and a warning letter period was in place since the end of August. Approximately 2,500 warning letters have been issued during that time.

To learn more about the payment or appeal process, please visit Newmarket.ca/CommunitySafetyCameras

The Town of Newmarket will not issue tickets or ask for payment by phone, email, or text message. Tickets from the Town of Newmarket will only be issued by letter mail.

Please note that York Region is also running an Automated Speed Enforcement Program separate from the Town of Newmarket’s program. York Region cameras are located on regional roads like Bathurst Street and Mulock Drive. For more information on their program, visit York Region’s Automated Speed Enforcement website.

Funds Collected will be used to Support Safe Streets and Active Transportation
The funds collected from the Community Safety Camera Program will be used to offset the cost to run the program and to keep the community even safer. As driver behaviour changes and vehicles start to slow down in Community Safety Zones, the funds generated by the program are anticipated to decrease as well. The potential funds generated by this program will be used to support safe streets, active transportation, and other Town initiatives.
