The Public Safety Related to Dogs Statue Amendment Act is now in effect. This legislation applies to all breeds of dogs and specific regulations for owners of pit bulls.
All pit bulls must:
- Be leashed and muzzled when off their owner's property
- Have a leash no longer than 1.8 metres in length
- Be sterilized unless the pit bull is designated as a 'show dog'
If your pit bull attacks or bites another domestic animal, person, or is found in violation of any part of the Dog Owners Liability Act. (DOLA), a proceeding may be commenced under Part IX of the Provincial Offences Act. If the owner is found in violation, the court shall order the destruction of the pit bull.
Characteristics of Pit Bulls
A pit bull includes breeds such as a pit bull terrier, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, an American Staffordshire Terrier, an American Pit Bull Terrier and any dog that has the appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to those breeds.
